The United States Department of Defense recently granted a contract to Lockheed Martin, a prominent military and aerospace weapons and equipment manufacturer, for producing and supplying ATACMS long-range guided missiles to Morocco. The contract, valued at approximately 227 million dollars, is part of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) system for fiscal year 2024 and is projected to conclude in 2028. This significant agreement is anticipated to bolster Morocco's defence capabilities, particularly with the utilization of the HIMARS missile launchers, thereby strengthening the strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington in the realm of military, defence, and security cooperation.
The HIMARS missile launchers, renowned for their high firepower and accuracy, are expected to enable the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco to deter potential threats effectively. Furthermore, extending the strikes with a long-range, high-precision (ground-to-surface) system notably enhances the country’s defence capabilities, reflecting its commitment to fortifying military tactics and safeguarding Moroccan sovereignty.
Hisham Moataded, an esteemed expert in international relations, affirms that this collaboration aligns with the Kingdom's strategic vision and its efforts to cultivate military and security capabilities, ultimately contributing to reinforcing its position in the region and promoting security and stability. Moataded emphasizes the importance of the technical modernization and professional development of the Moroccan defence sector, underscoring the strategic significance of fostering military cooperation between Rabat and Washington.
In concert with the ATACMS missile agreement, the United States Department of Defense has also accorded Lockheed Martin the approval to commence production of the "Fiber Shield" electronic warfare system for the modern 70/72 F-16 Block fighters of the Royal Air Force, further evidencing the robust ties between the two nations in enhancing defence capabilities. This advanced electronic warfare system is designed to provide a comprehensive electronic shield around the aircraft, empowering fighter pilots to execute missions safely and securely across increasingly complex battlefield scenarios.
The longstanding collaboration between the United States and Morocco in the field of defence has been fortified through numerous agreements, including joint military exercises and mutual support. Recently, on US Independence Day, King Mohammed VI expressed the Kingdom’s eagerness to solidify bilateral relations and elevate the multi-faceted strategic partnership to new heights.
In summary, the recent contract with Lockheed Martin for the supply of ATACMS long-range guided missiles and the approval to produce the "Fiber Shield" electronic warfare system underscore the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco, signifying a pivotal step in enhancing Morocco's defence arsenal and reinforcing its military capabilities.
